King Seiko 52KS Special 5256-8000

Here is a wonderful, all original King Seiko 52KS Special from 1975. The silver dial is in excellent condition, with steel Seiko and KS logos and barely any visible marks. It has faceted steel bar hour markers with black contrast, double at 12 o’clock. The tapered hands with black contrast stripes down the middle are in fine condition with light corrosion showing. The hack stops the seconds hand when the crown is pulled out to set the time. The steel framed window at 3 o’clock displays the quick-set date and weekday. The weekday is in Kanji and English with blue lettering for Saturday and red for Sunday. Note that the quick-set of the date winds the movement at the same time.
 
The stainless steel bezel is in fine condition, with some overall wear, perhaps most pronounced around 8 o’clock. The uniquely recognizable stainless case with the original KS crown and embedded lugs is in fine condition, with sharp angles and facets. It does not appear to have ever been polished and shows some overall wear. The stainless steel case back is in fine condition with some overall scratches and marks.
 
The watch comes on an after market leather strap of good quality.
 
Inside the watch, Seiko’s high grade 5256A movement beats strongly and accurately to within about +-12 seconds per day. The watch was fully serviced in November 2020 and comes with a 12 month warranty on its proper mechanical functioning.
 
This was the last version of the KS, and it is indeed a Special one! It was dubbed Special since the watchmakers thought they might never make mechanical watches ever again given the surge of quartz watches but luckily that never happened. This is a true piece of watch history and it is a great conversation starter.
